We Are the Aliens We’ve Been Waiting For

The recent stories in the New York Times and Washington Post recounting US Navy pilots’ encounters with unidentified flying objects are noteworthy in many respects. Among other things they call to mind an as-of-yet unwritten movie in which extra terrestrials arrive on Earth and announce that they’d like to take over.

Appealing to the world’s poor and precarious to support them, they offer everyone a better deal: a 9 hour workweek, a clean environment, free housing, free healthcare, free education, no more war…

And because this message turns out to be tremendously popular, and because overwhelming numbers of the world’s people support the extra terrestrials and their program, the ETs are able to take over without even resorting to the use of force — something which, theoretically, could happen on planet Earth without the ETs. That is, to paraphrase the late June Jordan, we are the aliens we’ve been waiting for.
