Opening This Weekend

Hollywood’s been putting out little but superhero movies and remakes for years, and they’re getting worse and worse. And this weekend is no exception.

The remake of Oliver Stone’s Platoon, though, looks pretty good.

Another film opening this weekend that looks like it’ll be fun is a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers. Based on Robert Heinlein’s novel, this critique of fascism is especially pertinent.

Another sci-fi flick, and one that’s relevant for its critique of technology and violence, is the remake of 2005’s A Sound of Thunder. The new A Sound of Thunder (based less on the 2005 Ben Kingsley film than on Ray Bradbury’s short story of the same title), is also worth catching.

But what I’m most looking forward to seeing this weekend is the long awaited remake of Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. Starring Tom Hanks, how can it miss? Catch it if you can.
