An Atlanta woman stands accused of killing her sons by burning them in an oven.
Lamora Williams, 24, allegedly killed 1-year-old Ja’Karter Williams and 2-year-old Ke’Younte Penn, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
A 3-year-old son was also in the home at the time, but was unharmed. A 6-year-old daughter was staying with other family members.
Williams had reportedly recently quit her job because she couldn’t find a babysitter, reports the Daily Mail.
She is said to have suffered from undiagnosed mental health problems since her father’s death five years earlier.
“Nobody could tell what she was going through,” said her friend, Neesa Smith.
Williams had called Smith, saying she “couldn’t do it anymore,” and then told her that he two youngest boys were dead. Smith urged Williams to call the police but instead, the mother called the children’s father, Jameel Penn.
Williams allegedly video-chatted with Penn, who called police when he noticed his children lying motionless in the video. “After I seen what I seen, you know I called the police,” he said.
When police arrived, Williams initially claimed to have left her kids with a caregiver and came back to find them dead and the caretaker gone. But the cops did not believe her.
Police say the victims had severe burn marks when their bodies were removed from the apartment.
The oven was taken from the scene for additional investigation and an official autopsy is still being conducted.
Fulton County Jail officials say Williams waived her first appearance in court for felony murder charges.
Williams’ sister, Tabitha Hollingsworth, thinks Williams should be put on suicide watch in Fulton County Jail. Family members have not been allowed to see her.
“I ain’t got no soul no more,” Penn said during a vigil following the tragedy.
