Lazy Friday Playlist: Music For Getting the Yankee Boot Off Your Neck

El Presidente. Photo credit: Ken Silverstein

We start with the late great Venezuelan folk singer Ali Primera’s version of Yankee Go Home.

Marcel Cartier is a young rapper who brings Ali Primera’s message right up to date.

Venceremos, the official campaign song of Allende’s Chile, is performed here by Chile’s greatest folk singer, Victor Jara, who was tortured and murdered by Pinochet’s goons.

Here’s a definitive recording of The People United Will Never Be Defeated, probably the best-known song of the Chilean revolution, as recorded by the Chilean group Inti-Illimani.

And an instrumental version of the same tune by a great band led by jazz greats Charlie Haden and Carla Bley.

Nicaragua, by the Fugs, is as applicable to Venezuela today as it was to Nicaragua in the 1980s. “Why does my country so often stand on the side of the mean and the cruel?”

Finally, for all the Democrats who are going along with Trump’s attempt to overthrow democracy in Venezuela, we have Phil Ochs’ satirical classic Love Me I’m a Liberal, as revised in the Reagan Era by Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon. This song deserves to be updated every few years.
