A Secret Record of Our Delirium

We could live one thousand years and we wouldn’t learn a thing. Nothing can be taught to us. You and me, we can’t learn anything from anyone. Nothing from the outside can reach us. None of us knows anything. We are absent not only from the world but from ourselves, and inhabit a territory that possesses no reality or connections, other than those of a shared ecstasy. Everything is equal. All distinctions have collapsed. A voice shouting in the street, a snippet of conversation in a coffee shop have the same value as a composed song. If, that is, such a thing as a composed song actually exists. Everything is music and everything is of equal value. Just as a human being is no better than an animal or a plant, the sound of a jackhammer is no less musical than birdsong or a symphony orchestra. We must learn to excel at doing nothing. Do you know how to do absolutely nothing at all? It is difficult; to arrive at that point takes a certain resolve. We could live one thousand years and we wouldn’t learn a thing. Nothing can be taught to us. You and me, we can’t learn anything from anyone. Nothing from the outside can reach us.

None of us knows anything.
