In Part 2 of my conversation with Prof. Jonathan Haslam, we discuss Soviet espionage, spies, how Stalin’s government developed loyalty and respect from his agents, and what this meant for the larger public. Everyone from the Cambridge Five to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg! Communist Party membership! Secret archives! It’s all here!
Most interestingly, he points out an important fact that American diplomacy still has not grasped: take the ideology of other governments seriously and do not assume that the other side is just a bunch of cynical operators using their purported ideology merely to manipulate the masses. This is a lesson we failed to accept during the Cold War and it continues to evade sensible foreign policymakers.
