Representative Diane Black. Has porn rotted her brain? Credit: Wiki Commons.

My absolute favorite instance of Republican ignorance, as of late, has to be Tennessee Representative Diane Black claiming that pornography is a “big part” of what causes school shootings. She says that porn is “available on the shelf when you walk into a grocery store.” I’m going to need the name of this grocery store she frequents because the place sounds AWESOME.

In all seriousness though, it’s beyond stupid to blame porn for school shootings and not, say, easy access to firearms or parents failing to keep their guns locked away properly. I grew up in a house with firearms (which were locked away in a gun safe) and access to my dad’s copies of Hustler. I didn’t grow up to be violent, but I did grow up to be a whore. And frankly, I’ll take slutting around over being a mass murderer any day!

It seems to me that sexually repressed teens are more likely to be violent than those who spend time jerking off to porn (which I assume they do on the Internet and not in grocery stores). But here’s one thing we don’t talk about enough when we talk about porn: it isn’t meant for children. It’s adult entertainment.

I firmly believe that tube sites are a huge problem and that all porn should be behind a paywall, where kids are far less likely to watch because most don’t have access to a credit card. I don’t think we should keep kids from porn because it will make them violent. That’s an absurd argument. But I do know that porn is not meant to be sex ed.

If we did a better job educating kids about sex, both at home and in schools, maybe fewer kids would feel the need to look at Internet porn as a basis for what sex should look like. Using pornography as a scapegoat for school shootings, and not acknowledging the real and pervasive issues with guns in our society, is an astoundingly stupid thing to do. But I wouldn’t expect much better from a Republican member of congress!

If porn is causing school shootings, what else is porn doing to our country? Is porn the reason we don’t have adequate healthcare? Has Representative Black looked at so much hardcore pornography in the grocery store that it’s actually rotted her brain? I mean, that makes about as much sense as blaming porn for school shootings. And perhaps more.
